即席ラーメン記念日——うどん1玉6円の時代に生まれた「魔法の食品」
1958年（昭和33年）8月25日、日清食品が世界初のインスタントラーメン「チキンラーメン」を発売しました。開発者は、同社創業者の安藤百福氏です。
「お湯を注ぐだけで、すぐに美味しく食べられる麺」という理念を掲げた安藤氏は、試行錯誤の末、天ぷらの調理法にヒントを得た「瞬間油熱乾燥法」を開発。麺を油で揚げることで水分を飛ばし、長期保存と短時間調理を同時に実現しました。
発売当時、うどん1玉が6円ほどだった時代に、チキンラーメンは1袋35円という決して安くはない価格でしたが、その画期的な手軽さから爆発的な人気を博しました。即席麺は後に「世界三大発明」のひとつに数えられるほどの存在となり、今や世界中の食卓に欠かせない存在です。ちなみに安藤氏の生涯を描いた物語は、2018年にNHK連続テレビ小説としてドラマ化もされましたね。

東京国際空港開港記念日——木造ターミナルから始まった、日本の空の玄関口
1931年（昭和6年）8月25日、東京・羽田に「東京飛行場」が開港しました。これが現在の東京国際空港（通称・羽田空港）の始まりです。
当時のターミナルは木造の小さな建物で、国内初の民間航空機専用空港としてスタートしました。それから90年以上の歳月を経て、羽田空港は日本最大の旅客数を誇る国際空港へと発展。今では国内外を結ぶ、まさに日本の空の玄関口としての役割を担っています。
小さな木造の建物から始まった歴史を思うと、今の巨大なターミナルビルの姿には、なんだか感慨深いものがありますね。

Instant Ramen Memorial Day — A “Magic Food” Born in an Era When a Bowl of Udon Cost 6 Yen
On August 25, 1958 (Showa 33), Nissin Foods released the world’s first instant ramen, “Chikin Ramen.” It was developed by the company’s founder, Andō Momofuku.
Guided by the vision of creating “noodles that could be made delicious in an instant, just by adding hot water,” Andō spent years in trial and error before developing what became known as “instant flash-frying dehydration,” a technique inspired by the process of frying tempura. By frying the noodles in oil to remove moisture, he achieved both long shelf life and remarkably fast preparation in one stroke.
At a time when a bowl of udon cost around 6 yen, Chikin Ramen was priced at 35 yen per pack — by no means cheap — yet its groundbreaking convenience made it an instant, massive hit. Instant noodles later came to be regarded as one of the “three great inventions of the modern world,” and today they remain an indispensable staple on dinner tables around the globe. Andō’s life story was even adapted into an NHK morning drama series in 2018.

Tokyo International Airport Opening Memorial Day — Japan’s Gateway to the Sky, Born from a Wooden Terminal
On August 25, 1931 (Showa 6), “Tokyo Airfield” opened in Haneda, Tokyo. This marked the beginning of what is now Tokyo International Airport, commonly known as Haneda Airport.
The terminal at the time was a small wooden building, and it opened as Japan’s first airport dedicated exclusively to civilian aircraft. More than 90 years later, Haneda has grown into the airport with the highest passenger volume in Japan, serving as the country’s true gateway to the sky, connecting Japan with destinations both domestic and international.
Thinking back on its origin — a small wooden building — there’s something quietly moving about the scale of the massive terminal buildings standing there today.
