老人の日｜敬老の日との違い
9月15日は「老人の日」です。もともと9月15日は「敬老の日」として国民の祝日に定められていましたが、2001年（平成13年）のいわゆるハッピーマンデー制度導入に伴う祝日法改正により、2003年（平成15年）から敬老の日は「9月第3月曜日」に移動しました。同じ2001年、老人福祉法が改正され、9月15日はあらためて「老人の日」として指定され、この日から1週間が「老人週間」とされています。敬老の日が「お年寄りを敬い長寿を祝う日」であるのに対し、老人の日は「高齢者福祉への関心や理解を深めることを目的とした日」という違いがあります。

9月15日は、アメリカの大手投資銀行リーマン・ブラザーズが経営破綻し、連邦破産法の適用を申請した日でもあります。この破綻をきっかけに世界的な金融危機が連鎖し、「リーマン・ショック」として世界経済に大きな爪痕を残しました。日本を含む世界中の株式市場や実体経済にも深刻な影響を及ぼしたことで知られています。

沖縄は共働きの家庭が多く、じいちゃんばあちゃんに育てられたという人も少なくありません。核家族化が進む地域も多い中、こうして三世代が日常的に関わり合える環境は、実はとても恵まれたことなのかもしれません。
保育園への送り迎えや、学校から帰った後の「ただいま」を受け止めてくれるのがおじいちゃんおばあちゃんだった、という記憶がある方も多いのではないでしょうか。
私自身も、同じ敷地内にじいちゃんばあちゃんが住んでいたので、「行ってきます」、「ただいま」は当たり前に行っていたし、両親の帰りが遅いときはじいちゃんばあちゃん家でご飯を食べていたりしました。
老人の日をきっかけに、当たり前になっている祖父母との日常に、あらためて感謝を伝えてみるのもいいかもしれません。

September 15th is “Senior Citizens’ Day.” September 15th was originally designated as the national holiday “Respect for the Aged Day,” but under the 2001 revision to the public holidays law that introduced the so-called “Happy Monday” system, Respect for the Aged Day moved to “the third Monday of September” starting in 2003. That same year, 2001, the Act on Social Welfare for the Elderly was also revised, redesignating September 15th itself as “Senior Citizens’ Day,” with the following week observed as “Senior Citizens’ Week.” The distinction is that Respect for the Aged Day is “a day to honor the elderly and celebrate longevity,” while Senior Citizens’ Day is “a day meant to deepen public interest in and understanding of elder welfare.”

September 15th is also the day the major American investment bank Lehman Brothers collapsed and filed for bankruptcy protection under federal law. That collapse triggered a chain reaction of global financial crises, leaving a deep scar on the world economy as what’s known as the “Lehman Shock.” It’s remembered for its severe impact on stock markets and real economies worldwide, Japan included.
Darwin Arrives at the Galápagos Islands (September 15, 1835)
September 15th is also the day Charles Darwin arrived at the Galápagos Islands aboard the survey ship HMS Beagle. The unique plants and animals he observed there are said to have been one of the hints behind the theory of evolution he would later present in On the Origin of Species.
Tanks Are Used in Combat for the First Time in History (September 15, 1916)
September 15th is also the day British forces became the first in the world to deploy tanks in actual combat, during the Battle of the Somme in World War I. In Okinawa, a lot of households have two working parents, so it’s pretty common for kids to end up being raised largely by their grandparents. In a lot of places where nuclear families have become the norm, having three generations involved in each other’s daily lives like this might actually be a pretty fortunate thing.
I imagine plenty of people have memories of grandma or grandpa being the one who dropped them off and picked them up from daycare, or the one who was there to say “welcome home” after school.
That was true for me too — my grandparents lived right on the same property, so saying “I’m off” and “I’m home” to them was just a normal part of my day, and on days when my parents came home late, I’d end up eating dinner over at my grandparents’ place.
Senior Citizens’ Day might be a good opportunity to stop and say thank you again for something that’s become such an ordinary part of daily life — spending time with your grandparents.
