Her name was Mumtāz Mahal. She was on campaign with her husband, the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahān, when she died shortly after giving birth to their fourteenth child. She was 38 years old.
Consumed with grief, Shah Jahān made a vow: “I will build something unlike anything else in the world.” Twenty-two years later, the white marble mausoleum known as the Taj Mahal was complete.

On June 17th, 1631, Shah Jahān — fifth emperor of the Mughal Empire — lost his beloved wife Mumtāz Mahal.
For nineteen years, Mumtāz had never once left her husband’s side. She accompanied him on military campaigns. She bore him fourteen children — seven of whom died in infancy. And then, shortly after giving birth to their fourteenth child, she died of complications in the field camp at Burhanpur. She was 38 years old.
Who Was Mumtāz Mahal?

When news of her death reached him, Shah Jahān reportedly could not eat or listen to music for weeks. It is said his hair turned white almost overnight.
And then — the Emperor made his decision. “Not merely to fulfill her wish. I will build something the world has never seen.”
22 Years of Construction — The Taj Mahal in Numbers
In 1632, construction began at Agra on the site where Mumtāz would rest. It was completed 22 years later, in 1653 — two decades and more after Shah Jahān had lost her.

“He Planned to Build a Black Taj Mahal on the Opposite Bank” — The Dream That Was Never Realized
Shah Jahān had an even grander vision — one that never came to pass.
The “Black Taj Mahal” Plan
· Across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahān reportedly planned to build a mirror image of the structure in black marble — to serve as his own tomb
· The two buildings would be connected by a bridge, with husband and wife lying in separate but facing mausoleums across the river

From his cell in Agra Fort, Shah Jahān could see the Taj Mahal through the window. The greatest thing he had ever built — shimmering white in the distance — was all he had left. He spent his final years looking at it from across the river. He died in Agra Fort in 1666.
After his death, his body was brought to the Taj Mahal and laid beside Mumtāz. The black mausoleum was never built — but the two of them rest in the same tomb. The dream ended; the love did not.
