Geta Day — A Wordplay Born from “7 Sun 7 Bu” and the Shape of “Two” Teeth
“Geta Day” was established by the National Federation of Wooden Footwear Industry Associations, and the date behind it has a fairly niche backstory.
The number “7 sun 7 bu” (a traditional unit of measurement often used for geta dimensions) gave us “July,” while the shape of the two teeth on the underside of a geta sandal, resembling the character “二” (ni, meaning “two”), gave us “22.” Combine the two, and you get July 22nd. Quite an elaborate bit of wordplay.
Part of the charm of geta is the distinctive “karan-koron” clacking sound they make with every step. Many people wear them with a yukata for summer festivals and fireworks displays. Around July 22nd typically falls “Taisho,” one of the 24 traditional solar terms marking the seasons, and it’s considered the point of the most intense heat of the entire year.
Taisho is also known as “Tempura Day.” The idea is that during this period, when the heat saps everyone’s stamina, eating oil-fried tempura provides solid calories to help power through the summer fatigue. Interestingly, the 23rd of every month is also designated “Tempura Day” — giving you a delightfully indulgent excuse to celebrate it twice a month.
