今日7月20日は、国民の祝日「海の日」。そして人類が初めて月に降り立った「月面着陸の日」でもあります。

海の日——明治天皇の「灯台巡視船」から生まれた祝日
「海の日」の由来は、1876年（明治9年）7月20日にさかのぼります。東北・北海道を巡幸していた明治天皇が、灯台巡視船「明治丸」に乗って青森から横浜港に無事帰着したことを記念する日でした。
この明治丸は日本政府がイギリスに発注した鉄製の汽船で、現在は国の重要文化財に指定され、東京海洋大学のキャンパス内に保存されています。
1996年に「海の日」として国民の祝日に制定された当初は7月20日固定でしたが、2003年からハッピーマンデー制度により7月の第3月曜日に変更されました。2026年は7月20日がちょうど第3月曜日にあたり、久しぶりに「本来の日付」で海の日を迎えることになります。
「海の恩恵に感謝するとともに、海洋国日本の繁栄を願う」という趣旨のこの祝日。実は世界で「海」をテーマにした国民の祝日を持つ国は非常に珍しく、日本ならではの祝日なんです。
月面着陸の日——「小さな一歩」が世界を変えた瞬間
1969年7月20日（アメリカ時間）、アポロ11号が月面に軟着陸。ニール・アームストロング船長が人類史上初めて月面に足跡を刻みました。
7月16日に打ち上げられてから4日後のこの瞬間、世界中の人々がテレビにくぎ付けになりました。当時の推定視聴者数は世界で5億人以上。人類史上最も多くの人が同時に見守った瞬間のひとつと言われています。
「これは一人の人間にとっては小さな一歩だが、人類にとっては偉大な飛躍である」——アームストロングのこの言葉は、半世紀以上経った今も色褪せることなく語り継がれていますね。
ハンバーガーの日——「海の日」に合わせた粋な演出
1996年、日本マクドナルドが日本進出25周年を記念して、7月20日を「ハンバーガーの日」に制定しました。
これは当時「海の日」が固定で7月20日だったことにちなみ、本格的な夏の幕開けを祝う意味も込められています。海の日が移動祝日になった今も、ハンバーガーの日は7月20日のまま。今日はハンバーガーで夏の始まりを祝ってみるのも良いですね
おまけ：Tシャツの日
1971年7月20日、日本で初めてTシャツの展示会が開催されたことにちなみ「Tシャツの日」も制定されています。夏本番、今日はお気に入りのTシャツで出かけてみるのもいいですね。

Marine Day — A Holiday Born from Emperor Meiji’s “Lighthouse Inspection Ship”
The origin of “Marine Day” traces back to July 20, 1876. Emperor Meiji, on a tour through the Tōhoku and Hokkaido regions, safely returned to Yokohama Port from Aomori aboard the lighthouse inspection ship “Meiji Maru.” This day commemorates that safe return.
The Meiji Maru was an iron steamship commissioned by the Japanese government from Britain, and it’s now designated as a National Important Cultural Property, preserved on the campus of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology.
When “Marine Day” was first established as a national holiday in 1996, it was fixed on July 20th. Since 2003, under the “Happy Monday” system, it has been observed on the third Monday of July instead. In 2026, the third Monday happens to fall exactly on July 20th — meaning we get to celebrate Marine Day on its “original” date for the first time in a while.
The holiday exists “to give thanks for the blessings of the ocean and to wish for the prosperity of Japan as a maritime nation.” Remarkably few countries in the world have a national holiday dedicated to the ocean — this is a distinctly Japanese celebration.
Moon Landing Day — The Moment “One Small Step” Changed the World
On July 20, 1969 (U.S. time), Apollo 11 made its soft landing on the lunar surface, and Commander Neil Armstrong became the first human being in history to leave footprints on the moon.
Four days after launching on July 16th, people around the world sat glued to their television screens for this moment. The estimated global audience at the time was over 500 million people — one of the most widely witnessed moments in human history.
“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Armstrong’s words remain just as powerful and unfaded more than half a century later.
Hamburger Day — A Clever Nod to Marine Day
In 1996, McDonald’s Japan designated July 20th as “Hamburger Day” to commemorate the 25th anniversary of its launch in Japan.
The date was chosen specifically because “Marine Day” was fixed on July 20th at the time, tying the celebration to the true start of summer. Even now that Marine Day has become a floating holiday, Hamburger Day has remained fixed on July 20th. Maybe today’s a good day to celebrate the beginning of summer with a burger.
Bonus: T-Shirt Day
July 20, 1971 also marks the day Japan held its very first T-shirt exhibition, leading to the establishment of “T-Shirt Day.” With summer now in full swing, today might be a good excuse to head out in your favorite tee.
