September 2nd Is “Lottery Day” — A Pun on “Ku (9) ji (2)”
September 2nd is “Lottery Day” (Takarakuji no Hi) in Japan. It was established in 1967 (Showa 42) by the lottery division of Dai-Ichi Kangyo Bank (now Mizuho Bank), which handled lottery sales at the time, based on a play on numbers: “ku (9) ji (2).” The goal wasn’t just to encourage people to buy tickets — it was also meant to remind winners that prize money can expire if they forget to claim it. Since 1973, there’s even been a “Lottery Day Bonus Drawing,” a kind of second-chance drawing where losing tickets are entered to win prizes.
Another “End of the War” — On September 2, 1945, Japan Signed the Instrument of Surrender
In Japan, August 15th is widely known as “the day the war ended” — that’s the day the Emperor’s radio broadcast informed the nation that the war was over. But under international law, the war didn’t officially end until about two weeks later, on September 2, 1945. On that day, aboard the USS Missouri anchored in Tokyo Bay, representatives of the Japanese government and Imperial General Headquarters signed the Instrument of Surrender with the Allied powers, formally and legally bringing World War II to a close. In many countries around the world, this September 2nd is observed as V-J Day. It’s not something people talk about much, but Japan actually has two “ends of the war” — August 15th and September 2nd.
