9月1日は「防災の日」｜関東大震災の教訓から生まれた日
9月1日は「防災の日」です。「防（9）災（1）」の語呂合わせ……と紹介されることもありますが、本来の由来は語呂合わせではなく、1923年（大正12年）9月1日午前11時58分に発生した関東大震災にあります。マグニチュード7.9とされるこの地震により、死者・行方不明者は10万5千人以上、家屋被害は約46万戸にのぼりました。この教訓を風化させず、災害への備えを社会全体で見直すことを目的として、1960年（昭和35年）に閣議了解のかたちで「防災の日」が制定されました。あわせて8月30日〜9月5日は「防災週間」、9月は「防災月間」とされ、全国各地で防災訓練が行われます。

二百十日｜「台風が来やすい日」は本当か
9月1日（年によっては8月31日）は、雑節のひとつ「二百十日（にひゃくとおか）」にもあたります。立春から数えて210日目にあたるこの日は、稲の開花期と台風シーズンが重なることから、昔から農家の間で「三大厄日」のひとつとして注意が呼びかけられてきました。
昭和期に気象庁が命名するような大型台風がこの日の前後に集中して発生したことから「台風の特異日」とも言われますが、実際には台風の上陸数は年平均2.7個程度と少なく、統計的に有意な偏りとまでは言えない、という指摘もあります。平成以降は命名クラスの大型台風がこの時期に集中する傾向も薄れており、「必ず台風が来る日」というよりは、「台風シーズンの入り口として気を引き締める日」と捉えるのが実情に近いようです。
関東大震災の当日に開業式を迎えた帝国ホテル・ライト館
9月1日にまつわるエピソードとして特に有名なのが、帝国ホテルの新館（通称・ライト館）です。世界的建築家フランク・ロイド・ライトが設計したこの建物は、奇しくも関東大震災当日の1923年9月1日に開業披露宴が予定されていました。周囲の建物が倒壊するなかで、ライト館は大きな被害を免れたと伝えられ、「地震に耐えたホテル」として今も語り継がれています。
ライトは軟弱な地盤を見越して、建物の重さと同量の土を掘り出す「浮き基礎」という工法を採用しており、これが被害を抑えた一因とされています。ただし近年の建築史研究では、無傷だったという話がやや伝説化して語られている面もあり、「耐震設計だけが理由と言い切るのは単純化しすぎ」という指摘もあります。※諸説あり
小澤征爾さんの誕生日（1935年9月1日）
世界的指揮者・小澤征爾さんは、1935年9月1日生まれです。カラヤンやバーンスタインに才能を見出され、ボストン交響楽団音楽監督やウィーン国立歌劇場音楽監督などを歴任し、「世界のオザワ」として日本人指揮者の道を切り拓きました。2024年2月6日に88歳で逝去されています。
キウイの日・マテ茶の日｜語呂合わせ系のゆるい記念日
- キウイの日：「キュー（9）イ（1）」の語呂合わせから、キウイフルーツの輸入・販売を手がけるゼスプリ インターナショナルジャパン株式会社が制定。消費拡大とともに、キウイを「元気フルーツ」として広めることが目的です。
- マテ茶の日：日本マテ茶協会が制定。主産地であるアルゼンチンで、その年の収穫祭が9月1日に行われることにちなんでいます。「飲むサラダ」とも呼ばれる栄養豊富なマテ茶、飲んだことありますか？
「9月1日問題」｜子どもの心に寄り添う日でもある
真面目な話題として、9月1日は「9月1日問題」と呼ばれる社会課題が知られる日でもあります。2016年に内閣府が公表したデータによると、過去40年間で18歳以下の自殺者数が最も多かったのが9月1日でした。夏休みが明けて新学期が始まるタイミングに、学校生活への不安やプレッシャーが重なりやすいことが背景にあるとされています。
ゲーム普及のこの世の中、リセットすれば何とかなると安易に考えてしまう風潮があるように思えます。でも実際は、リセットしても思い通りのリセットとはならないのが現実です。自分だけで悩まずセカンドオピニオンとして周りにヘルプを出してみましょう。意外と、スムーズに解決できることもあると思いますよ。本人だけでなく、相談された周りの大人でも自分の経験だけでなく他人の意見や経験に頼ることをお勧めします。時代は変わり、昔と今では悩みの種類も、似たような案件でも、微妙に対応策は変わったりするからです。

September 1st Is “Disaster Prevention Day” — Born from the Lessons of the Great Kanto Earthquake
September 1st is “Disaster Prevention Day” (Bōsai no Hi) in Japan. It’s sometimes introduced as a play on numbers — “bō (9) sai (1)” — but the real origin isn’t wordplay at all. It traces back to the Great Kanto Earthquake, which struck at 11:58 a.m. on September 1, 1923 (Taisho 12). The quake, estimated at magnitude 7.9, left more than 105,000 people dead or missing and damaged roughly 460,000 homes. To keep that lesson from fading and to encourage society as a whole to review its disaster preparedness, “Disaster Prevention Day” was established by cabinet decision in 1960 (Showa 35). Alongside it, August 30–September 5 is designated “Disaster Prevention Week” and all of September “Disaster Prevention Month,” with disaster drills held nationwide.

Backpack — I actually use this one myself as part of my evacuation gear, and it’s also great for everyday use, like trips to the mall. At home, if you leave it set up and expanded, it can even double as a pet crate. Getting your pet used to it in advance might make them more willing to hop in without resistance if you ever need to evacuate.
Nihyaku Tōka — Is September 1st Really “Typhoon-Prone”?
September 1st (or August 31st, depending on the year) also marks nihyaku tōka (“the 210th day”), one of Japan’s traditional seasonal markers, or zassetsu. Falling exactly 210 days after the start of spring (risshun), this date coincides with both the rice-flowering season and the height of typhoon season, which is why farmers have long treated it as one of the “three great danger days” of the agricultural calendar.
It’s often called a “singular day” for typhoons, since several major, officially-named typhoons happened to cluster around this date during the Showa era. In reality, though, an average of only about 2.7 typhoons make landfall in Japan each year, and some point out that this is too small a sample to be statistically meaningful. Since the Heisei era, the tendency for large, named typhoons to cluster around this time has also weakened. So rather than “the day a typhoon is guaranteed to hit,” it’s probably more accurate to think of it as a seasonal reminder that typhoon season has arrived — a nudge to stay alert.
The Imperial Hotel’s Wright Building, Which Held Its Opening Ceremony the Day the Great Kanto Earthquake Struck
One of the most famous stories tied to September 1st involves the Imperial Hotel’s new wing, known as the “Wright Building.” Designed by the world-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, its grand opening reception happened to be scheduled for September 1, 1923 — the very day of the Great Kanto Earthquake. While buildings all around it collapsed, the Wright Building reportedly escaped major damage, and it’s still remembered today as “the hotel that withstood the earthquake.”
Anticipating the site’s soft ground, Wright used a technique called a “floating foundation,” excavating an amount of soil equal to the building’s own weight — a method credited as one reason the damage was limited. That said, more recent architectural history research suggests the “undamaged” story has become somewhat legendary in the retelling, and some scholars caution that attributing it entirely to earthquake-resistant design oversimplifies things. (Accounts vary.)
Conductor Seiji Ozawa’s Birthday (Born September 1, 1935)
The world-renowned conductor Seiji Ozawa was born on September 1, 1935. Discovered and championed by Herbert von Karajan and Leonard Bernstein, he went on to serve as music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera, among other posts, blazing a trail for Japanese conductors on the world stage as “the Ozawa of the world.” He passed away on February 6, 2024, at the age of 88.
Kiwi Day and Yerba Mate Day — A Couple of Lighthearted, Pun-Based Anniversaries
- Kiwi Day: Named for the pun “kyū (9) i (1),” this day was established by Zespri International Japan, which imports and sells kiwifruit, with the goal of boosting consumption and promoting kiwi as an “energizing fruit.”
- Yerba Mate Day: Established by the Japan Yerba Mate Tea Association, this date marks the harvest festival held every September 1st in Argentina, the tea’s main country of origin. Have you ever tried yerba mate, sometimes called “salad in a cup” for its rich nutritional content?
The “September 1st Problem” — A Day That’s Also About Being Gentle with Children’s Hearts
On a more serious note, September 1st is also known for something called the “September 1st Problem.” According to data released by Japan’s Cabinet Office in 2016, over the past 40 years, September 1st has been the single day on which the most suicides among people 18 and under occurred. It’s believed that the return from summer break and the start of the new school term can bring together anxiety and pressure around school life all at once.
In a world where games are so widespread, there does seem to be a tendency to think a little too easily that “if things go wrong, you can just hit reset.” But in reality, resetting rarely gives you the do-over you were hoping for. Instead of struggling with something alone, try reaching out to the people around you for a second opinion — you might be surprised how smoothly things can work out once you do. And it’s not just the person struggling — the adults being confided in should also feel free to draw on other people’s experience and perspective, not just their own. Times change, and even similar-looking problems can call for subtly different responses than they used to.
