1945年8月14日、日本政府はこの日、御前会議においてポツダム宣言の受諾を正式に決定しました。7月26日に発表されたポツダム宣言（詳しくは7月26日の記事もご覧ください）を巡り、政府内でも意見が分かれる中での重い決断でした。
この決定を受け、翌8月15日正午、昭和天皇によるラジオ放送（いわゆる玉音放送）を通じて、国民に戦争終結が伝えられることになります。8月14日は、長く続いた戦争が終わりへと向かう、歴史の大きな分岐点となった一日でした。

2008年8月14日、北京オリンピック競泳男子200メートル平泳ぎで北島康介選手が金メダルを獲得しました。同月11日の100メートル平泳ぎでも金メダルを獲得しており、前回のアテネ大会に続く2大会連続での2種目制覇は、日本人として史上初めての快挙でした。

Patent Day — Japan’s First-Ever Patent Was for Rust-Prevention Paint
On August 14, 1885 (Meiji 18), Japan issued its very first “senbai tokkyo” (exclusive patent, the precursor to the modern patent system). This historic first patent went to Hotta Zuishō, a sculptor and lacquer artisan, for his invention: a rust-preventive paint called “Hotta Rust-Prevention Paint and Its Application Method.”
“Patent Day” was established to commemorate this occasion. Japan is now one of the world’s leading countries for patent applications — and it all began with this very first step, marking the start of Japan’s identity as a nation built on technology. It might be fun today to pause and remember that every convenient thing around you carries its own story of invention.
August 14, 1945 — The Decision to Accept the Potsdam Declaration, Bringing the War to Its End
On August 14, 1945, the Japanese government formally decided, in an Imperial Conference, to accept the Potsdam Declaration. The declaration, issued on July 26th (see the July 26th post for more detail), had divided opinion within the government, and this decision was made only after immense deliberation.
Following this decision, at noon the next day — August 15th — Emperor Showa’s radio broadcast (the so-called Gyokuon-hōsō) would announce the end of the war to the nation. August 14th marked a major turning point in history: the moment the long war finally began its path toward ending.
Bonus: Kitajima Kōsuke’s Back-to-Back Double Gold
On August 14, 2008, swimmer Kitajima Kōsuke won gold in the men’s 200m breaststroke at the Beijing Olympics. Having already won gold in the 100m breaststroke on August 11th of the same month, this made him the first Japanese athlete in history to sweep both breaststroke events across two consecutive Olympic Games, following his earlier wins at the Athens Games.
