Voyager 1 Launch Day (September 5, 1977)
September 5th also marks the day NASA’s uncrewed space probe, Voyager 1, was launched. Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 kept flying even after observing Jupiter and Saturn, and in 2012 NASA announced it had become the first human-made object to leave the solar system and enter interstellar space. Nearly half a century after launch, it’s still flying farther from Earth than anything else ever observed.
