ChatGPT(OpenAI)
知名度No.1。
Claude(Anthropic)
Gemini(Google)
AI Made Easy: A Simple Look at Where AI Stands Today
These days, you can hardly go a day without hearing the word “AI.” But do you think it sounds “complicated” or “has nothing to do with me”?
In fact, today’s AI has become a very familiar tool that you can use just by talking to your smartphone. In this article, I’ll introduce the current state of AI as simply as I can.
Choosing AI by Its Strengths
There isn’t just one AI; there are many kinds. Each has different strengths, so I recommend choosing one the way you’d pick the right tool for a job.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
The best-known name. You can use it for free, so it’s a good place to start. It’s an all-rounder that handles research, advice, writing, and just about anything else.
Claude (Anthropic)
Well regarded for natural, easy-to-read writing. It’s great for summarizing long texts and drafting emails or blog posts.
Gemini (Google)
Google’s AI. It puts a lot of effort into image generation and editing, and it works well with Google’s other services.
There are plenty of others, but I’ll skip them here. Honestly, you could just ask an AI about that, too (lol).
They’re all updated constantly, and their strengths and weaknesses shift little by little. The best approach is to try the ones that catch your eye and pick the one that feels right for you.
AI Can Also Be Someone to Talk To
On social media, you sometimes see videos of people chatting with AI over drinks. In fact, conversational AI lets you talk back and forth almost as if you were speaking with a real person when you use voice.
The major AIs, including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, have voice conversation features. When typing feels like a hassle, you can just speak.
Perfect for Learning English
English learning is what I especially want to recommend.
- It’s not a human, so there’s no embarrassment about making mistakes.
- You can ask the same question as many times as you like without getting a sour look.
- You can ask it to “use simpler English” or “correct my mistakes.”
- You can practice any time you like, whether it’s the middle of the night or early morning.
Even if you don’t have time to go to an English conversation school, it feels like having a practice partner right in your pocket, ready to talk in your spare moments.
My Story: I Digitized a Paper Sudoku
I love sudoku puzzles, but I had a problem when playing paper-based ones (the kind you find at 100-yen shops or in newspapers). While solving, I would “pencil in” numbers I wasn’t sure about and erase them later. By doing that, the paper would tear from the eraser, and the grid would get messy and hard to read.
“Wouldn’t it be great if I could digitize this?” I thought, and I started by consulting a chat AI.
Note: There are already plenty of sudoku apps, but once I start playing those I can’t stop and end up wasting a lot of time. The free ones also have annoying ads, so existing apps weren’t an option for me.
The First Miss: It Made a Full-Fledged Sudoku App
I asked the AI, “I want to digitize sudoku, so please come up with a prompt.” When I handed the resulting prompt straight to Chappy (my nickname for ChatGPT), it did indeed make an app. But what came out was a full-fledged app for playing sudoku from scratch. It had difficulty levels from easy to extremely hard, a timer, a “puzzle of the day” feature, and a display of my best times. And since it had no annoying ads either, I ended up playing it for a long time afterward (lol).
No, no, that’s not it. What I wanted was simply to “replace the paper sudoku in my hands with a digital version,” so it was a little off the mark.
The Second Try: I Said What I Wanted, Just As It Was
So I told Chappy what I wanted to do in my own words, without rephrasing it, and had it create a new prompt.
What I told it (roughly):
“When I solve a paper sudoku, the paper tears or gets hard to read when I erase the numbers I’ve penciled in. I want to digitize paper-based sudoku as it is.”
When I handed that prompt straight to Work, this time it produced a sudoku app with exactly the features I wanted. I can enter and erase tentative numbers easily, and there’s no worry about the paper tearing. It was a moment when I truly felt, “This has made things so convenient!”
Tips for Using AI Well
① Tell it your problem rather than your goal
This time, too, telling it plainly that “the paper tears and is hard to read” got me closer to what I wanted.
② If it doesn’t work, say it again differently
AI will redo things as many times as you need. If something feels “a bit off,” don’t hesitate to rephrase.
③ Have AI write the instructions (prompts) for AI
If you’re struggling with how to word your instructions, letting the AI think of them is also an option.
Conclusion
Today’s AI can help with research, English practice, and even simple app building, just by talking to it in everyday language, with no programming knowledge required.
I didn’t include it in this article, but a higher-tier model from Chappy called “Dots” has apparently come out, and it seems it can do things like “Hayato” in the TV drama “VIVAN.” I haven’t tried it yet, but just thinking about it is exciting, isn’t it?
I hope I can introduce it here after I try it.
Don’t overthink it. Start by asking an AI about just one small thing that’s bothering you. You’ll likely be surprised at how familiar and reliable it feels.
