4月30日は「国際ジャズ・デー」。
音楽好きでなくても、一度は耳にしたことがあるかもしれません。
この記念日は、ユネスコによって2011年に制定されました。目的はただひとつ。
ジャズを通して、世界に平和と対話を広げること。
ですが、ここで疑問が生まれます。
なぜ数ある音楽の中で「ジャズ」なのでしょうか？
April 30th is “International Jazz Day.” Even if you’re not a music lover, you may have heard of it at least once.
This commemorative day was established by UNESCO in 2011. Its purpose is simple — to spread peace and dialogue throughout the world through jazz.
But here, a question arises. Out of all the music in the world, why “jazz”?

ジャズのルーツは、アメリカの黒人文化にあります。

The roots of jazz lie in African American culture. Amid the harsh history of slavery and racial discrimination, people expressed their emotions and feelings through music.
What emerged from that experience was the style known as “improvisation” — playing ad lib.

The power of jazz eventually began to influence politics and international relations.
During the Cold War, the United States used jazz as a tool of “cultural diplomacy.” At the center of this effort was trumpeter Louis Armstrong.
He toured the world, connecting with people through music — transcending the barriers of language.
Even across different nations and ideologies, music could foster mutual understanding. This was a revelation to many.

Jazz was used not only as entertainment, but also as a message to society.
For example, singer Nina Simone channeled her anger and sorrow over discrimination into song during the Civil Rights Movement.

ジャズは、その象徴です。

The message International Jazz Day wants to convey is very simple:
👉 Even with our differences, people can understand one another.
Even when words don’t reach, even when cultures differ, music can connect human hearts.
Jazz is the symbol of that.
