当時、日本からの海外渡航は厳しく制限されており、堀江さんは正式なパスポートも持たずに単独無寄港での太平洋横断を成し遂げました。到着当初は不法入国者として拘束されかけたものの、その偉業と冒険精神に心を打たれたサンフランシスコ市長らの計らいにより、特別に入国が許可されたという逸話も残っています。

Pacific Crossing Memorial Day — A Young Man’s Solo, Non-Stop Voyage Across the Ocean
On August 12, 1962, ocean adventurer Horie Kenichi (then just 23 years old) completed a solo crossing of the Pacific Ocean aboard his small yacht, the Mermaid. After a 93-day voyage, he arrived in San Francisco, USA.
At the time, overseas travel from Japan was severely restricted, and Horie completed his solo, non-stop crossing without even a valid passport. Upon arrival, he was nearly detained as an illegal immigrant — but the story goes that the mayor of San Francisco and others, deeply moved by his extraordinary feat and adventurous spirit, arranged for him to be granted special entry into the country.
His account of the journey, published as the book Alone on the Pacific, became a bestseller and was later adapted into a film. Horie went on to complete further Pacific crossings by yacht and even by solar-powered boat, and remains active in adventure well into his 80s — a man who has truly lived as a lifelong challenger.
