今日8月18日は、夏の風物詩「甲子園」の原点にあたる「高校野球記念日」と、漢字の成り立ちから生まれたユニークな「米の日」が重なります。
高校野球記念日——豊中球場から始まった、110年の歴史
1915年（大正4年）8月18日、大阪府の豊中球場で「第1回全国中等学校優勝野球大会」の開会式が行われました。これが現在の全国高等学校野球選手権大会、通称「夏の甲子園」の始まりです。
記念すべき第1回大会には、地区予選を勝ち抜いた全国10校が出場。トーナメント方式で争われ、京都二中が初代優勝校の栄冠に輝きました。1924年（大正13年）の第10回大会からは会場が兵庫県西宮市の阪神甲子園球場に変更され、1948年（昭和23年）の学制改革以降、現在の「全国高等学校野球選手権大会」という名称に改められました。
豊中球場での小さな開会式から始まったこの大会が、今や毎年多くの人々を熱狂させる国民的行事に成長したことを思うと、感慨深いものがありますね。
今年の夏の甲子園、沖縄代表は２年連続１２回目の沖縄尚学高校が出場し、8/10に行われた横浜高校との対戦に2-7で敗れ１回戦敗退となってしまいました。
横浜は2回表、適時打で2点を先制しました。沖縄尚学は2回裏に1点を返しましたが、横浜は3回表に追加点を奪い、3－1とリードしました。
試合の大きな分岐点は6回でした。横浜は適時打を重ねて一挙4点を追加し、7－1と大きくリードしました。沖縄尚学も6回裏に1点を返しましたが、その後は横浜の投手を打ち崩せませんでした。
この試合は、前年の春のセンバツでも対戦した因縁のカードでした。2025年のセンバツでは、横浜が沖縄尚学を8－7で破っており、今回は夏の甲子園で再び横浜が勝利しました。
1回戦ながら「昨夏の王者」と「昨春のセンバツ王者」がぶつかる注目カードになりました。
横浜高校は2回戦：日南学園に10－1、3回戦：霞ケ浦に5－2、４回戦：花巻東との準々決勝と駒を進めてきました。まさに今日、第三試合で花巻東との試合が行われます。

米の日——「八十八」の手間に込められた、感謝の心
「米」という漢字を分解すると、「八十八」という数字になります。これにちなみ、毎月8日・18日・28日が「米の日」として制定されています（諸説あり、米は八十八の手間がかかるという言い伝えも由来のひとつとされています）。
お米一粒が食卓に届くまでには、種まきから収穫まで、本当に多くの手間と時間がかかっています。同じ由来から、お米を原料とする麺・ビーフンにちなんだ記念日もこの日に制定されているのだとか。
普段何気なく口にしているご飯も、農家の方々の丹精込めた作業があってこそ。今日は一粒一粒への感謝の気持ちを、少しだけ思い出してみるのも良いかもしれません。

Today, August 18th, brings together “High School Baseball Memorial Day,” marking the origin of the quintessential summer tradition “Koshien,” and “Rice Day,” a uniquely charming observance born from the structure of a kanji character.
High School Baseball Memorial Day — A 110-Year History That Began at Toyonaka Stadium
On August 18, 1915 (Taisho 4), the opening ceremony of the “1st National Secondary School Championship Baseball Tournament” was held at Toyonaka Stadium in Osaka Prefecture. This marked the beginning of what is now the National High School Baseball Championship, popularly known as “Summer Koshien.”
That historic first tournament featured 10 schools from across the country who had fought their way through regional qualifiers. Played in a single-elimination format, Kyoto Nichū claimed the title of the very first champion. Starting with the 10th tournament in 1924 (Taisho 13), the venue moved to Hanshin Koshien Stadium in Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, and following the education system reforms of 1948 (Showa 23), the tournament took on its current name.
There’s something genuinely moving about the fact that a modest opening ceremony at Toyonaka Stadium grew into the national event that captivates so many people every single year.
At this year’s Summer Koshien, Okinawa Shogaku High School represented Okinawa for the 12th time in 2 consecutive years, but was defeated 2-7 by Yokohama High School in the first round on August 10th.
Yokohama took an early 2-0 lead with a timely hit in the top of the 2nd inning. Okinawa Shogaku answered back with a run in the bottom of the 2nd, but Yokohama extended their lead to 3-1 with an additional run in the top of the 3rd.
The turning point of the game came in the 6th inning. Yokohama piled on with a series of timely hits to add 4 runs at once, pushing the score to a commanding 7-1. Okinawa Shogaku managed to add one more run in the bottom of the 6th, but couldn’t break through against Yokohama’s pitching after that.
This matchup carried some history — the two teams had also faced off in the previous spring’s Senbatsu tournament, where Yokohama defeated Okinawa Shogaku 8-7. This time, at Summer Koshien, Yokohama came out on top once again.
Even as a first-round game, it turned into a marquee matchup between “last summer’s champion” and “last spring’s Senbatsu champion.”
Yokohama High School has since advanced through the tournament: a 10-1 win over Nichinan Gakuen in the second round, a 5-2 win over Kasumigaura in the third round, and now faces Hanamaki Higashi in the quarterfinals. That game is actually happening today, as the third match of the day.

Rice Day — The Gratitude Held Within “Eighty-Eight” Steps of Effort
The kanji character for “rice” (米) can be broken down into the numbers “eighty-eight” (八十八). In honor of this, the 8th, 18th, and 28th of every month have been designated “Rice Day” (there are various theories behind this, including the old saying that rice requires eighty-eight steps of labor to produce).
From planting the seeds to the final harvest, an enormous amount of effort and time goes into bringing a single grain of rice to our tables. Based on this same origin, “bīfun” (rice noodles), which are made from rice, also has a related commemorative day on this date.
The rice we eat so casually every day exists only because of the painstaking work of farmers. Today might be a good day to remember a little gratitude for every single grain.

- 1868: French astronomer Pierre Janssen, while observing a total solar eclipse in India, discovered a spectral line in sunlight indicating the presence of helium.
- 1909: The city of Tokyo gifted 2,000 cherry tree saplings to Washington, D.C., in the United States. The gesture is said to have been inspired by First Lady Helen Taft’s fascination with Japanese cherry blossoms, and the trees are still cherished today along the Potomac riverside.
