マッターホルン北壁は、アイガー北壁・グランド・ジョラス北壁と並ぶ「アルプス三大北壁」のひとつで、熟練の登山家でも命がけの難所とされる場所。今井さんはその後、1969年にアイガー北壁、1971年にグランド・ジョラス北壁も制覇し、女性として世界初のアルプス三大北壁完全制覇を成し遂げました。

実はマッターホルン登頂と同じ1960年代——1960年7月19日、池田勇人内閣の発足に伴い、中山マサ氏が厚生大臣に就任。日本初の女性大臣が誕生しました。
在任期間はわずか5ヶ月でしたが、その間に母子家庭への児童扶養手当支給の法制化に尽力。就任時に「婦人が大臣になったからには、プラスアルファがなければ」と語ったという逸話も残っています。この一歩から、現在まで40人以上の女性大臣が誕生してきました。

Yamanashi Peach Day — A Wordplay Coincidence with the Number 200
Yamanashi Prefecture is Japan’s top peach-producing region, and “Yamanashi Peach Day” was established by the Yamanashi Fruit Growers’ Association to promote its peaches nationwide.
The date’s origin is delightfully unique. The kanji “百” (hyaku, meaning “hundred”) doubled reads “momo momo” — echoing “momo,” the Japanese word for peach — and July 19th also happens to be exactly the 200th day of the year (the 201st in a leap year). It also lines up perfectly with peak peach shipping season, making it the ultimate “eat them now” kind of anniversary.
Yamanashi’s peaches are grown in a climate with dramatic temperature swings between day and night, which gives them their signature high sweetness and juiciness. If you spot them at the supermarket around this time of year, they’re well worth picking up.
Matterhorn North Face Ascent Day — A World First, Achieved by an All-Women Team
On July 19, 1967, Michiko Imai and Yoshiko Wakayama, members of the Tokyo Women’s Medical University mountaineering club, successfully summited the north face of the Matterhorn in the Alps. It was the world’s first ascent of a north face by an all-women climbing party.
The Matterhorn’s north face, alongside the Eiger and Grandes Jorasses, is one of the “Three Great North Faces of the Alps” — a route considered life-threatening even for seasoned mountaineers. Imai went on to conquer the Eiger’s north face in 1969 and the Grandes Jorasses in 1971, becoming the first woman in the world to complete all three of the Alps’ great north faces.
This achievement inspired the novel Ginrei no Hito (Person of the Silver Peaks) and moved countless people at the time. Imai — a physician who continued to take on the mountains alongside her medical career — quietly overturned the era’s assumption that “women simply couldn’t do this.”
Japan’s First Female Cabinet Minister — Born in the Very Same Decade
Interestingly, in that same era — on July 19, 1960 — Masa Nakayama was appointed Minister of Health and Welfare under the Ikeda Hayato cabinet, becoming Japan’s first-ever female cabinet minister.
Her term lasted only five months, but during that brief window she worked to establish legal support for child allowances for single-mother households. Upon taking office, she reportedly said, “Now that a woman has become a minister, there had better be something extra to show for it.” From that single step, more than 40 women have since gone on to serve as cabinet ministers in Japan.
Bonus: The Dawn of the Carp’s Golden Era
On July 19, 1975, at the All-Star Game held at Koshien Stadium, Hiroshima Toyo Carp players Koji Yamamoto and Sachio Kinugasa hit back-to-back home runs. This moment marked the beginning of the “Carp’s Golden Era,” and that same year the team went on to win its first-ever league championship.
