See you soon.
Today, August 5th, brings together “Taxi Day,” marking a new chapter in Japan’s transportation history, and “Oyakodon Day,” perfectly timed to help fight off summer fatigue.
Taxi Day — Japan’s Taxi History, Born from Just 6 Cars
On August 5, 1912 (the 1st year of the Taisho era), Japan’s first taxi company, the “Taxi Jido-sha Company,” was established in Yurakucho (near Sukiyabashi), Tokyo. The National Federation of Hire-Taxi Associations established “Taxi Day” in 1989 to commemorate this milestone.
Japan’s very first taxis were just six Ford Model T vehicles, imported from America and fitted with taxi meters. Today, taxis are such a common sight everywhere across the country, but it all began with just those six cars.
Under the slogan “Taxis connect circles of people, circles of community,” various campaigns — including the distribution of traffic safety items — are held nationwide around this time each year. Maybe today’s a good day to remember to offer a word of thanks to a taxi driver who safely gets you where you need to go.
Oyakodon Day — Beat Summer Fatigue with “O (0) – ya (8) – ko (5)”
Based on the wordplay “o (0) – ya (8) – ko (5),” echoing “oyako” (parent and child), “Oyakodon Day” was established by the Kansai Egg Distribution Council in collaboration with the Chicken Meat Association.
The day carries the hope that more people will rediscover the deliciousness of oyakodon — the classic dish made with chicken and egg. Interestingly, sales of oyakodon tend to dip during the summer months. That’s precisely why this day carries the message: “This is exactly the season, when summer fatigue tends to creep in, to eat it as a stamina-boosting meal.”
Chicken is rich in protein, and pairing it with egg further balances out the nutrition. The gentle flavor of soft, silky egg simmered over rice makes oyakodon an easy, comforting dish to enjoy even when your appetite has taken a hit from the heat. 🍚
Other Events on August 5th
- 1884: Construction began on the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty in New York, USA. Completed the following year in 1885, it would go on to hold the statue gifted by France.
- 1962: Actress Marilyn Monroe passed away suddenly at just 36 years old — a legendary Hollywood star who continues to captivate people around the world to this day.
- 1874: Japan’s postal savings system began, modeled after the British system. It would later evolve into what is now known as “Japan Post Bank.”
Today’s Takeaway ✍️
A culture of getting around that began with just six cars, and a comforting dish to power us through the summer heat. Today feels like a day for reflecting on how small first steps grow into things we take for granted every day.
If you happen to take a taxi today, why not offer the driver a small word of thanks — and for dinner, beat the summer heat with a bowl of oyakodon? 🚕🍚
Have a wonderful day today.
See you soon.
