今日が「植物学の日」な理由/Why today is “Botany Day”
1862年（文久2年）の旧暦4月24日に、高知県高岡郡佐川町で生まれたことにちなんで、この日が「植物学の日」に制定されました。「マキノの日」とも呼ばれています。
April 24th on the old lunar calendar in 1862 (the 2nd year of Bunkyū) was the birthday of Makino Tomitaro, born in Sakawa Town, Takaoka District, Kochi Prefecture — and that’s why this day was designated “Botany Day.” It’s also known as “Makino Day.”
驚きの経歴/A remarkable career
高知県出身で、なんと小学校を2年で中退しながらも独学で植物学の研究を続け、50歳（1912年）には東京帝国大学理科大学で講師も務めました。学歴を持たず権威になびかない彼は学内から圧力を受けながらも、65歳で理学博士の学位を取得し、77歳まで大学に貢献しました。
Born in Kochi Prefecture, he dropped out of elementary school after just two years, yet continued his botanical research entirely through self-study. At age 50 (1912), he became a lecturer at the Faculty of Science at Tokyo Imperial University. Without formal academic credentials and unwilling to bow to authority, he faced pressure from within the university — but he persevered, earning his Doctor of Science degree at age 65 and continuing to contribute to the university until age 77.
驚異的な功績/Extraordinary achievements
94歳で亡くなるまでに、新種1,000種と新変種1,500種を命名し、およそ60万点の標本を採集しました。
By the time he passed away at age 94, he had named 1,000 new species and 1,500 new varieties, and had collected approximately 600,000 plant specimens.
有名な言葉/His famous words
「雑草という名の植物はない」
という言葉は、植物学者の彼をご存知でない方でも聞いたことがあるのではないでしょうか。いかに植物を愛していたかが伝わってきますね。
“There is no such thing as a plant called a weed.” Even those who don’t know him as a botanist may have heard this quote. It truly conveys how deeply he loved plants.
妻への愛「スエコザサ」/Love for his wife — “Sueko-zasa”
図鑑の最後のページを飾ったのは「スエコザサ」。万太郎（ドラマの主人公）は、見つけた新種のササに感謝と永遠の愛を誓い、妻・寿恵子の名を刻んでいました。 これは実際の牧野博士も同様で、亡き妻への深い愛情を新種の植物の名前に込めた実話です。
The final page of his field guide featured “Sueko-zasa.” Mantaro (the drama’s protagonist) named a newly discovered bamboo species after his wife Sueko, pledging his eternal gratitude and love. This was true of the real Dr. Makino as well — he poured his deep affection for his late wife into the name of a new plant species. It’s a true story.
ゆかりの施設/Related facilities
晩年を過ごした東京・練馬区大泉には「牧野記念庭園」があります。 また高知県立牧野植物園では毎年4月24日を「マキノの日」として入園無料にしており、植物観察ツアーなどの特別イベントも開催されています。
In Oizumi, Nerima, Tokyo — where he spent his later years — there is the “Makino Memorial Garden.” At the Kochi Prefectural Makino Botanical Garden, April 24th is celebrated as “Makino Day” with free admission, special plant observation tours, and other events.
小学校中退から独学で日本植物学の父になるって、すごいロマンがありますよね！
NHK連続テレビ小説「らんまん」のモデルとなった人らしいです。
残念ながら、おじーはこのドラマを観たことがないのでコメントできませんが、こういう実際の人の物語って多少フィクションも入ってるとは思いますが、その人の事が本とかで知るよりももう少し身近に感じていいですよね。
何か一つに特化する。
常に自分には何があるんだろうと考えてますが、なかなかたどり着けない課題です。

Going from elementary school dropout to self-taught father of Japanese botany — there’s something wonderfully romantic about that, isn’t there! He was apparently the model for the NHK morning drama series “Ranman.”
Sadly, this old guy (ojī) has never watched the drama, so I can’t really comment — but stories about real people like this, even with a bit of fiction mixed in, let you feel closer to them than just reading about them in a book, don’t you think?
Specializing deeply in one thing. I keep asking myself what that one thing is for me, but it’s a question I haven’t quite found the answer to yet.
