On August 26, 1909, German elementary school teacher Richard Schirrmann took his students on a field trip when they were caught in a sudden downpour and took shelter at a nearby school. The rain didn’t let up even as night fell, and the group ended up spending the entire night there in the schoolhouse.
This experience sparked an idea in Schirrmann: lodging where traveling young people could stay safely and affordably. He later went on to found the youth hostel movement. Youth hostels have since spread around the world, supporting the travels of countless people, especially young travelers.
