Nose Day — One of Japan’s Four Great “Facial Feature” Holidays
“Nose Day” was established from the wordplay “ha (8) – na (7),” echoing “hana” (nose). As it turns out, this day stands alongside “Ear Day” on March 3rd, “Beard Day” on August 8th, and “Eye Care Day” on October 10th as one of what could be called Japan’s “Four Great Facial Feature Holidays.”
Consultation events and lectures with ENT specialists are held across the country, aimed at spreading accurate knowledge about nasal congestion, allergic rhinitis, and other nose-related issues that, precisely because they’re so common, often get overlooked.
As a side note, there’s a phenomenon called the “photic sneeze reflex” — the tendency to sneeze involuntarily when looking at a bright light — and it’s said that roughly 1 in 4 Japanese people experience it. If you’ve ever suddenly sneezed while standing in the sunlight, it turns out that wasn’t just a quirk unique to you.

“Risshū,” one of the 24 traditional solar terms, marks the beginning of autumn on the traditional calendar. In practice, this period almost always coincides with the harshest heat of the entire year — yet Japanese has a wealth of beautiful seasonal words unique to this time, like “zansho” (lingering summer heat) and “aki atsushi” (autumn heat).
Interestingly, Risshū also marks the point at which seasonal greeting cards switch from “shochū-mimai” (midsummer greetings) to “zansho-mimai” (late-summer greetings). If you forgot to send a midsummer greeting, sending it as a late-summer greeting from today onward is perfectly proper etiquette.
The harsh heat will continue for a while yet, but searching for small signs of autumn — a breeze in the evening, the sound of insects at night — in these fleeting moments is a distinctly Japanese way of enjoying the changing seasons. Maybe it’s worth paying a little extra attention to that today.
