今日は、音楽の聴き方を世界中で変えた「ウォークマンの日」、夏の本番を告げる「山開き・海開き」、そして日本初の児童文芸誌にちなんだ「童謡の日」が重なる、賑やかな一日です。
ウォークマンの日——世界を変えた小さな革命
1979年7月1日、ソニーが携帯式ヘッドホンステレオ「ウォークマン（TPS-L2）」を発売しました。定価は33,000円（当時）。
それまで音楽は「家で聴くもの」でした。ウォークマンはその常識を根底からひっくり返し、「どこでも、自分だけの音楽を」という新しい文化を生み出しました。発売翌月には初回生産の3万台が完売、その後半年間も供給不足が続くほどの大ヒット。
後にiPod、スマートフォンへと続く「パーソナルオーディオ」の文化は、まさにここから始まったのです。
ちなみに「ウォークマン」という名前、最初は社内から「そんな変な英語はおかしい」と反対意見が多かったとか。しかしその「変な名前」が世界共通語になりました。常識を疑うことが、時に世界を変えるんですね。
山開き・海開き——夏がはじまる合図
7月1日は、全国各地で「山開き」「海開き」が行われる日でもあります。
特に富士山は7月1日に山開きを迎え、山頂への登山が公式に解禁されます。江戸時代、登山はもともと信仰行事であり、年間を通じて自由に登ることはできませんでした。それが解禁される日が「山開き」の起源です。
海開きも同様で、海水浴シーズンの安全を祈願する神事が行われます。梅雨が明けたら、海へ！山へ！今年の夏の計画はもう立てましたか？
童謡の日——「赤い鳥」が生んだ子どもの文化
1918年7月1日、作家・鈴木三重吉が日本初の児童文芸誌『赤い鳥』を創刊しました。これを記念して「童謡の日」が制定されています。
芥川龍之介、北原白秋、西條八十といった当代一流の文豪たちが作品を寄稿したこの雑誌から、数多くの名童謡が生まれました。「からすなぜなくの」「夕焼け小焼け」……子どものころ口ずさんだ歌が、100年以上前の大人たちの情熱から生まれていたとは、感慨深いものがありますね。

Walkman Day — A Small Revolution That Changed the World
On July 1, 1979, Sony released the portable headphone stereo “Walkman (TPS-L2)” at a list price of ¥33,000 at the time.
Until then, music was something you listened to at home. The Walkman turned that assumption completely on its head, giving birth to a new culture of “your own music, anywhere you go.” The entire first production run of 30,000 units sold out the very next month, with supply shortages persisting for another six months — a massive hit by any measure.
The culture of “personal audio” that eventually led to the iPod and the smartphone traces its roots directly to this moment.
Incidentally, the name “Walkman” was initially met with strong internal opposition at Sony — people said “that kind of broken English sounds ridiculous.” And yet that “ridiculous name” became a universal word recognized around the world. Questioning common sense has a way of changing everything.
Yama-biraki & Umi-biraki — The Signal That Summer Has Begun
July 1st is also the day when “Mountain Openings” and “Sea Openings” take place across Japan.
Mount Fuji in particular officially opens for climbing on July 1st, when the ascent to the summit is formally permitted. During the Edo period, mountain climbing was originally a religious observance — it was not something you could do freely throughout the year. The day when that restriction was lifted became the origin of “Yama-biraki.”

Dōyō no Hi — The Children’s Culture Born from “Akai Tori”
On July 1, 1918, author Suzuki Miekichi launched Akai Tori (The Red Bird) — Japan’s first literary magazine for children. “Children’s Song Day” was established to commemorate this milestone.
This magazine, which drew contributions from the finest writers of the era — Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, Kitahara Hakushū, Saijō Yaso — gave rise to countless beloved children’s songs. “Karasu Naze Naku no,” “Yūyake Koyake”… To think that the songs we hummed as children were born from the passion of adults living more than a hundred years ago — there’s something quietly moving about that.

- 1889: The Tōkaidō Main Line opened along its full route, connecting Shimbashi and Kobe in 20 hours and 5 minutes.
- 1903: The first Tour de France got underway — now the world’s greatest cycling race.
