今日8月9日は、長崎市にとって深い意味を持つ「ながさき平和の日」（長崎原爆忌）です。
1945年（昭和20年）8月9日午前11時2分、アメリカ軍のB29爆撃機が長崎市松山町の上空約500メートルでプルトニウム型原子爆弾を炸裂させました。広島に続く、人類史上2度目の核攻撃でした。当時の長崎市の推定人口約24万人のうち、約7万4千人もの尊い命が失われたとされています。
長崎原爆犠牲者慰霊平和祈念式典
毎年8月9日、長崎市松山町の平和公園では「長崎原爆犠牲者慰霊平和祈念式典」が執り行われます。原爆が投下された午前11時2分、長崎の鐘やサイレンが鳴らされ、参列者全員が1分間の黙祷を捧げます。
続いて長崎市長による「平和宣言」が読み上げられ、核兵器の廃絶と世界恒久平和の実現が訴えられるのが通例です。原爆投下から50年を迎えた1995年、この日は正式に「ながさき平和の日」として位置づけられました。2026年の今年は、被爆から81年目を迎えます。
平和公園に込められた祈り
平和公園には、彫刻家・北村西望氏によって制作された「平和祈念像」が置かれています。天を指す右手は「原爆の脅威」を、水平に伸ばした左手は「平和」を、軽く閉じたまぶたは「原爆犠牲者の冥福を祈る心」を表しているのだそうです。
公園内には他にも、平和の鐘、平和の泉、折鶴の塔、そして原爆が投下された正確な地点を示す原爆落下中心碑などが配置され、訪れる人々にあの日の記憶を伝え続けています。
今日という日に
広島（8月6日）に続き、長崎でもこの日、核兵器のない世界への願いが改めて世界に発信されます。81年という長い歳月が流れても、あの日の記憶を語り継ぐ努力は今も続けられています。

Today, August 9th, holds deep and solemn meaning for the city of Nagasaki as “Nagasaki Peace Day” (the anniversary of the Nagasaki atomic bombing).
At 11:02 AM on August 9, 1945 (Showa 20), a U.S. Army B-29 bomber detonated a plutonium-type atomic bomb approximately 500 meters above Matsuyama-machi in Nagasaki. It was the second nuclear attack in human history, following Hiroshima. Of Nagasaki’s estimated population of roughly 240,000 at the time, an estimated 74,000 lives were lost.
The Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Victims Memorial Peace Ceremony
Every year on August 9th, the “Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Victims Memorial Peace Ceremony” is held at Peace Park in Matsuyama-machi, Nagasaki. At 11:02 AM — the exact moment the bomb was dropped — the Nagasaki Bell and sirens sound, and all those in attendance observe a minute of silence together.
This is traditionally followed by the Nagasaki mayor’s reading of the “Peace Declaration,” calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of lasting world peace. In 1995, marking 50 years since the bombing, this day was formally designated “Nagasaki Peace Day.” This year, 2026, marks the 81st anniversary.
The Prayers Held Within Peace Park
Peace Park is home to the “Peace Statue,” created by sculptor Kitamura Seibo. The right hand, raised toward the sky, is said to represent “the threat of the atomic bomb”; the left hand, extended horizontally, represents “peace”; and the gently closed eyes represent “a prayer for the souls of the atomic bomb victims.”
The park also contains the Peace Bell, the Fountain of Peace, the Tower of Paper Cranes, and the Hypocenter Monument, which marks the exact spot above which the bomb detonated — each continuing to convey the memory of that day to all who visit.
On This Day
Following Hiroshima on August 6th, Nagasaki once again sends out to the world, on this day, its wish for a future free of nuclear weapons. Even after 81 years, the effort to pass down the memory of that day continues.
When 11:02 AM arrives today, even from somewhere far away, perhaps we might take a quiet moment to still our hearts and think of those who lost their lives. And in that same quiet, hope that peaceful, ordinary days continue on into the future.
