郵政記念日（逓信ていしん記念日）/Postal Memorial Day (Teishin Memorial Day)

1871年4月20日（明治4年）、日本で近代郵便制度がスタートしました。この日を記念して「郵政記念日」が制定されています。

それまでの飛脚制度に代わり、均一料金で全国どこへでも手紙が届く仕組みが誕生。初日はなんと東京〜大阪間の郵便物が一斉に動き出しました。

On April 20, 1871 (the 4th year of the Meiji era), Japan’s modern postal system officially launched. This date is commemorated annually as Postal Memorial Day. Replacing the old hikyaku courier system, the new framework made it possible to send letters anywhere in the country at a flat rate. On that very first day, mail between Tokyo and Osaka began moving all at once.

制度を作った男、前島密/The Man Who Built the System: Maejima Hisoka

日本近代郵便の父と呼ばれるのが前島密まえじまひそか。彼は1円切手の肖像としても知られます。前島は「郵便」という言葉自体を考案した人物でもあり、その先見性と行動力は明治の偉人の中でも際立っています。

The father of Japan’s modern postal service is widely considered to be Maejima Hisoka, whose portrait also appears on the 1-yen stamp. Maejima is credited with coining the very word yūbin (postal mail) itself, and his foresight and capacity for action set him apart even among the great figures of the Meiji era.
