See you soon.
Today, July 26th, brings together “Ghost Day,” marking the debut of one of Japan’s most iconic ghost stories, and “Potsdam Declaration Day,” a pivotal turning point toward the end of World War II.
The chill of a classic ghost story, and the weight of history — today, let’s look at two very different themes.
Ghost Day — The Most Famous Ghost in Japan, Born from “Yotsuya Kaidan”
On July 26, 1825, the kabuki play Tōkaidō Yotsuya Kaidan, written by Tsuruya Nanboku, had its premiere at the Nakamura-za theater in Edo.
The story follows Oiwa, a woman betrayed by her husband Iemon and driven to a tragic death, who returns as a vengeful spirit. It’s said to have been inspired by an actual incident that occurred during the Genroku era. For nearly 200 years since, it has remained Japan’s most famous ghost story, retold again and again through kabuki, film, and television dramas.
Even today, it’s said that performers and staff involved in productions of “Yotsuya Kaidan” continue the custom of visiting a shrine associated with Oiwa before the run begins. Turning to ghost stories as a way to find a chill of relief from the summer heat is a distinctly Japanese cultural tradition.
Potsdam Declaration Day — A Heavy Door Toward the End of the War
On July 26, 1945, gathered in Potsdam, Germany, U.S. President Harry Truman, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Chinese Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek jointly issued the “Potsdam Declaration,” a 13-article demand for Japan’s surrender.
The declaration called for the unconditional surrender of Japanese military forces, the elimination of militarism, the establishment of democracy, and the punishment of war criminals. The Japanese government initially withheld its response. Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet Union’s entry into the war against Japan, the government formally decided to accept the declaration on August 14th of that year. The following day, August 15th, Emperor Showa’s imperial rescript announcing the end of the war — the so-called Gyokuon-hōsō (Jewel Voice Broadcast) — was delivered to the nation, bringing the Pacific War to its end.
The Potsdam Declaration became a foundational document underpinning the postwar Constitution of Japan and postwar democracy. It marks a historic day that is essential to understanding how Japan came to be the way it is today.
Other Events on July 26th
- 1847: Liberia, founded primarily by freed slaves and free Black Americans, declared independence from the United States.
- 1965: The Maldives gained independence from Britain — a republic made up of 1,192 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean.
- 2005: Golfer Ai Miyazato, then 24 years old, won her first LPGA title at the Evian Masters — the youngest Japanese player at the time to achieve such a feat.
Today’s Takeaway ✍️
The chill of a ghost story passed down for nearly 200 years, and a monumental decision that brought a war to its end. Today feels like a day for reflecting on the weight of history worth passing down.
Both the fear found in fiction, and the weight carried by real historical events, are things worth carrying forward to the next generation. Perhaps today is a good day to reflect quietly on that.
Have a wonderful day today.
See you soon.
