But Garo began publishing bold, socially conscious, and thought-provoking works one after another — including Shirato Sanpei’s Kamui-den and works by Mizuki Shigeru — playing a major role in popularizing “gekiga,” a more mature and realistic style of visual storytelling.
The value that Garo pioneered — the idea that “manga is something adults read too” — went on to profoundly shape all of Japanese manga culture. The seinen (young adult) and adult manga genres we now take for granted might look entirely different today if this magazine had never existed.
Machu Picchu Discovery Day — A “Sky City” That Was Rediscovered, Not Discovered
On July 24, 1911, American explorer Hiram Bingham, guided by local residents, arrived at “Machu Picchu” high in the Peruvian Andes.
Built along a ridge at an elevation of 2,430 meters, this Inca ruin — a “city in the sky” showcasing extraordinarily precise stonework — was subsequently introduced to the world through Bingham’s academic research, and in 1983 it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Strictly speaking, though, Machu Picchu’s existence was already known to local residents at the time, and Bingham’s true contribution is often characterized less as a “discovery” and more as an “introduction to the wider world.” What counts as a “new discovery” to one person may have simply been ordinary, familiar scenery to someone else all along — a perspective worth sitting with for a moment.
Kappa-ki — The Weight of the Literature Akutagawa Ryūnosuke Left Behind
On July 24, 1927, literary master Akutagawa Ryūnosuke — known for works like “Rashomon,” “The Nose,” and “The Spider’s Thread” — passed away at the young age of 35. This day is known as “Kappa-ki,” named after one of his representative works, Kappa.
“Life is not worth even a single line of Baudelaire” — one of Akutagawa’s famous statements. A master of the short story, his works continue to appear in Japanese language textbooks and are read by countless people to this day.
