メイフラワー号がイギリスを出航（1620年9月16日）

9月16日は、後にアメリカ大陸への入植者「ピルグリム・ファーザーズ」を乗せたメイフラワー号が、イギリス・プリマスを出航した日でもあります（グレゴリオ暦で9月16日、当時イギリスで使われていたユリウス暦では9月6日）。当初は8月中の出航を予定していましたが、大幅に遅れてこの日の出航となりました。この航海はのちのアメリカ建国史における象徴的な出来事として知られています。

誕生日というと、つい「自分が主役の特別な日」だと思ってしまいがちですが、私は本当は「お母さんに感謝する日」なんじゃないかと思っています。

長い間、自分のお腹の中でわが子と共に生き、そして痛みに耐えながらこの世に送り出してくれる。想像するだけで、感謝しかありません。

若い頃はそんなことにも気づかず、母親にひどい言葉をぶつけてしまっていたような気がします。今思えば、本当に情けない話です。

On the night of this day in 1890, the Ottoman Empire’s warship Ertuğrul struck a reef off the coast of Kushimoto, Wakayama Prefecture, during a typhoon and sank. It was a major disaster in which 587 of the 656 crew members lost their lives, but the local residents of the Kashino district, even though the typhoon had left their own food supplies scarce, desperately worked to rescue the 69 survivors, offering up kimonos, rice, and even their emergency chickens. This event is still passed down today as a symbol of friendship between Japan and Turkey.

The Mayflower Departs England (September 16, 1620)

September 16th is also the day the Mayflower, carrying the settlers later known as the “Pilgrim Fathers,” departed from Plymouth, England, bound for the American continent (September 16 by the Gregorian calendar; September 6 by the Julian calendar then in use in England). The departure had originally been planned for sometime in August, but was significantly delayed until this date. This voyage is known as a landmark event in the history of America’s founding.

The Wall Street Bombing (September 16, 1920)

September 16th is also the day a bomb attack took place on Wall Street in New York, USA. A bomb hidden in a horse-drawn wagon exploded, causing many casualties, and the incident is recorded as the world’s first vehicle-based bomb attack.

B.B. King (born September 16, 1925): An American blues guitarist and singer. Known as the “King of Blues,” he influenced musicians around the world alongside his beloved guitar, “Lucille.”
Lee Kuan Yew (born September 16, 1923): Singapore’s first prime minister. He’s known as the leader who, in a single generation, guided Singapore from a developing nation to a developed one during its founding era.

Wrap-Up

When you hear the word “birthday,” it’s easy to think of it as “a special day where you’re the star of the show,” but I actually think of it as more of a “day to thank your mom.”

For all those months, she lived together with her child inside her own body, and then endured the pain of bringing that child into the world. Just imagining it, all I feel is gratitude.

When I was younger, I don’t think I ever noticed any of that, and I feel like I said some pretty awful things to my mom. Looking back now, it’s honestly embarrassing.
