1903年（明治36年）8月22日、東京電車鉄道の路面電車が新橋〜品川間で営業運転を開始しました。これが東京初の路面電車、通称「チンチン電車」の始まりです。

1978年（昭和53年）8月22日、日本を代表する冒険家植村直己氏が、犬ぞりを使ってグリーンランドを単独で横断するという、人類史上初の快挙を成し遂げました。
厳しい寒さと孤独の中、多くの世界的冒険家たちが挑んでは断念し、時には命を落とすことさえあったこの過酷な挑戦。植村氏はこれを見事に成功させ、その勇気と功績は今も世界中で語り継がれています。グリーンランドを自治領とするデンマークでは、植村氏がこの旅で到達した峰に、彼の名を冠したという逸話も残っているのだとか。
植村氏はこの後もアマゾン川筏下りや世界初の北極点単独到達など、数々の偉業を成し遂げましたが、1984年、冬季のマッキンリー（デナリ）単独登頂の後、消息を絶ちました。挑戦し続けたその生き様は、今なお多くの人々の心を動かし続けています。

Chin-Chin Densha Day — Tokyo’s First Streetcar, Ringing In with a Bell
On August 22, 1903 (Meiji 36), the Tokyo Streetcar Railway began operating a tram line between Shimbashi and Shinagawa. This marked the beginning of Tokyo’s first streetcar, affectionately nicknamed the “Chin-Chin Densha” (Ding-Ding Train).
The nickname comes from the bell drivers rang as a safety signal when departing or stopping, which sounded like “chin-chin” (ding-ding). Interestingly, Japan’s very first streetcar actually began operating slightly earlier, on February 1, 1895, run by the Kyoto Electric Railway. Tokyo’s streetcar network expanded rapidly afterward, becoming the Tokyo Municipal Streetcar and later the Toei Streetcar system, supporting the daily commutes of residents for many decades.
Most routes have since been replaced by subways and buses, but some lines remain active to this day — such as the Toden Arakawa Line (now nicknamed the “Tokyo Sakura Tram”). Hearing that distinctive rumble still running through the city, you can almost sense a little of the excitement people in the Meiji era must have felt at the arrival of a new age.
Uemura Naomi Completes a Solo Crossing of Greenland
On August 22, 1978 (Showa 53), renowned Japanese adventurer Uemura Naomi achieved a first in human history: a solo crossing of Greenland by dog sled.
This brutal challenge, undertaken amid extreme cold and total isolation, had defeated numerous world-class adventurers before him — some of whom even lost their lives attempting it. Uemura succeeded where so many others could not, and his courage and achievement continue to be told and admired around the world to this day. In Denmark, which governs Greenland as an autonomous territory, there’s said to be a peak named after Uemura, marking a summit he reached during this very journey.
Uemura went on to accomplish numerous other extraordinary feats — rafting the length of the Amazon River and achieving the world’s first solo expedition to the North Pole among them. In 1984, following a solo winter ascent of Denali (Mount McKinley), he disappeared and was never found. His relentless spirit of challenge continues to move people to this day.
