沖縄は戦後アメリカの統治下に置かれ、車は右側通行というアメリカ方式が採用されていました。1972年の本土復帰後も交通方式はしばらくそのままでしたが、日本本土との整合性を取るため、復帰6年後のこの日、県内すべての標識・信号を一夜にして切り替えるという、世界的にも類を見ない大規模な事業が実施されました。

Pro Wrestling Memorial Day — The History Rikidozan Opened Up for Japanese Wrestling
On July 30, 1953, Rikidozan, known as “the father of Japanese professional wrestling,” held the founding ceremony of Japan’s first professional wrestling organization, the “Japan Pro Wrestling Association,” in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
Rikidozan originally competed as a sumo wrestler, rising to the rank of sekiwake. He retired from sumo in 1950, switched to professional wrestling the following year, and after training in America, founded the Japan Pro Wrestling Association. In an era when television was just beginning to spread, crowds gathered in front of TV sets to watch, and the sight of Rikidozan’s karate chops sending opponents flying is said to have given the Japanese people, still rebuilding in the postwar years, enormous courage and hope.
The path Rikidozan opened up was later carried forward by legends such as Giant Baba and Antonio Inoki, who together shaped Japanese professional wrestling culture into the form we recognize today.
Umeboshi Day — The Good Fortune Wrapped Up in “Misfortune Departs”
“Umeboshi Day” was established by Higashi Farm in Minabe Town, Wakayama Prefecture — one of Japan’s leading plum-producing regions. The date comes from the wordplay “nan (7) ga sa (30) ru,” meaning “misfortune departs.”
Since ancient times, sayings like “eating an umeboshi wards off the day’s misfortune” have been passed down, making pickled plums a cherished symbol of good health and good luck. In practice, umeboshi is genuinely rich in nutrients like citric acid, and is known to aid fatigue recovery, stimulate appetite, and offer antibacterial benefits — making it a perfect food for this season, when summer fatigue tends to set in.

Okinawa’s “730” — The Day Traffic Direction Changed Overnight
There’s also an event deeply tied to Okinawa on this date. At 6 AM on July 30, 1978, all vehicles across Okinawa Prefecture switched simultaneously from driving on the right to driving on the left. This historic event is known as “730” (Nana-San-Maru), named after the date itself.
After the war, Okinawa was placed under American administration, and right-hand traffic — the American system — was adopted. Even after Okinawa’s reversion to Japan in 1972, the traffic system remained unchanged for a while. But six years after reversion, in order to align with mainland Japan, an unprecedented, large-scale undertaking was carried out: every road sign and traffic signal across the entire prefecture was switched overnight.
On that day, a large number of police officers and Self-Defense Force personnel were reportedly deployed across the prefecture to direct traffic, with careful preparations made to minimize confusion. It remains one of the pivotal turning points in Okinawa’s modern history.
