今日6月23日は、沖縄県にとって特別な意味を持つ「慰霊の日」です。
1945年（昭和20年）のこの日、太平洋戦争末期に約80日間続いた沖縄戦における組織的な戦闘が終結しました。沖縄県では条例によってこの日を休日と定め、毎年さまざまな慰霊祭が行われています。
沖縄慰霊の日とは
沖縄戦は、アメリカ軍を主体とする連合国軍と日本軍との間で行われた、第二次世界大戦末期の地上戦です。この戦いで、軍人だけでなく一般住民を含む約20万人もの尊い命が失われたとされています。
毎年6月23日には、沖縄県糸満市の平和祈念公園で「沖縄全戦没者追悼式」が行われ、戦没者の遺族や関係者が集まり、静かに祈りを捧げます。
公園内には、国籍や軍人・民間人の区別なく、沖縄戦で亡くなったすべての人々の名前が刻まれた「平和の礎」があります。1995年に建立されたこの記念碑は、戦争の悲惨さと平和の尊さを後世に伝え続けています。

少し視点を変えると、6月23日は世界的には「オリンピック・デー」でもあります。
1894年6月23日、フランスのクーベルタン男爵の呼びかけによってパリで国際会議が開かれ、国際オリンピック委員会（IOC）が創設されました。これが近代オリンピックの始まりです。
スポーツを通じて世界が手を取り合う日が、平和への祈りを捧げる日と同じ日付に重なっているというのも、何か考えさせられるものがありますね。

Today, June 23rd, holds special significance for Okinawa Prefecture as “Irei no Hi” (Memorial Day).
On this day in 1945 (Showa 20), organized combat in the Battle of Okinawa — which had raged for roughly 80 days during the final stages of the Pacific War — came to an end. Okinawa Prefecture has designated this day as a holiday by ordinance, and various memorial services are held throughout the prefecture each year.
What Is Okinawa Memorial Day?
The Battle of Okinawa was a ground battle fought in the final stages of World War II, primarily between Allied forces led by the United States and the Japanese military. The fighting claimed an estimated 200,000 lives, including not only soldiers but a great many ordinary civilians as well.
Every year on June 23rd, the “Okinawa Memorial Service for All War Dead” is held at the Peace Memorial Park in Itoman City, Okinawa Prefecture, where bereaved families and others gather to offer quiet prayers.
Within the park stands the “Cornerstone of Peace” (Heiwa no Ishiji) — a memorial inscribed with the names of everyone who died in the Battle of Okinawa, regardless of nationality or whether they were military personnel or civilians. Erected in 1995, this monument continues to convey the tragedy of war and the preciousness of peace to future generations.

International Olympic Day Falls on the Same Date
Shifting perspective slightly, June 23rd is also recognized globally as “International Olympic Day.”
On June 23, 1894, an international congress was convened in Paris at the urging of Baron Pierre de Coubertin of France, leading to the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). This marked the beginning of the modern Olympic Games.
There’s something thought-provoking about the fact that a day dedicated to nations coming together through sport falls on the very same date as a day devoted to prayers for peace.
